Church History

The First Methodist Church in Pittsburg was first organized in 1857, the congregation originally met in a log school house. Two years later in 1859 the log cabin was replaced by a two-story frame building.  The bottom floor was for the church services, and school, the top floor was used by the Masonic Lodge.

In 1869 Pittsburg became a half station and John C. Smith was appointed pastor.  W. H. Pitts and H. A. Pitts donated one acre to the trustees of the church in 1870.  In 1889 the old frame building was getting too small and the building was sold to the Masons for the sum of $200 and new church was built at a cost of $3,000.  The church building built in 1889, had also become too small and in 1905 with the leadership of Rev. E. L. Settles the present building was erected at a cost of $30,000.

The church celebrated its centennial and homecoming on November 24, 1957, its sesquicentennial in 2007, and its 160th anniversary was in 2017. The church is famous for its pipe organ and the unique and beautiful stained glass windows.  The church is just one of the many historical landmarks in a city full of history.
